Short Background Summary:

Arek is a twin with his brother, Reknul. Their Khatun claimed them to be reincarnations of a fierce pair of red-haired twins that were slain in battle once. Reknul was said to be the brother of speed, and Arek the brother of strength. The brothers grew up believing they were these reincarnations all of their life.

After their first battle, Arek walked away without having taken any lives, and covered with enough of his own blood that it fooled the other Dotharl. Though no stranger to killing, he refused to partake in the murder of the innocents they raided for a feeling of battle. His people learned the next morning that he took no lives. Reknul and the Dotharl both shamed him for this, claiming he either had not found his spirit, or that he was weak.

Arek left Dotharl Khaa under the cover of night, and used what money he had in Kugane to take a boat to the west. He began to adventure in a team with four others in Eorzea, and with them he found his new family. This team fell apart after they went to the Battle of Carteneau, unable to flee fast enough from Bahamut's destruction. When Arek woke up the next morning, his four friends were gone.

Now Arek lives in the shroud in a quiet life. He spends his day hunting, taking contracts against Centurio Hunts, and occasionally takes an adventuring job. Secretly, though, the Dotharl and their ways always remain on his mind. He hopes that he never becomes like them.

Background

Arek now, and before.

Long read ahead. Want a short summary? Head into the Basics category!

A Dotharl woman gave birth to a pair of red-headed twins, two healthy boys. They were believed to be a fierce pair of fighters, named Arek and Reknul. The stories of these two Dotharl in the past was well known, their strength combined being a dangerous encounter on the field of battle. It was believed that the Dotharl had two more fierce fighters reborn to them that night.

The first born twin was Reknul, stories telling of speed so swift that they always met their mark. The second born twin was Arek, stories telling of strength so mighty that his weapons could sever opponents in two. This was what they always heard as they grew up, and it was how they were raised. Much like every Dotharl is, everyone having some story behind their reincarnation, and being raised believing it.

Arek grew up hearing of this twin brother of strength, and took it to heart every day. He even did what he could to replicate his looks, and would wear blue paint to symbolize the splatter of blood that the brother was said to have often across his face after every fight. This was an easy way to tell the twins apart, which ever one wore paint as if it were a splatter of blood. He spent many days training with weapons to try making himself stronger, his desire to be as strong as he was so many years ago.

The twins became the age of sixteen when they were ready to enter battle with the rest of their clan. Arek, the brother who wielded both mighty weapons, and could deliver shattering blows with his fist. Reknul, the brother whose fists moved swiftly, and could wield lighter weapons that were only made better with his agility. The Dotharl was ready to see the return of the fierce twins.

Their expectations would meet only disappointment, how ever. Come the first battle, blood was spilled by the twins. Reknul's fists struck swiftly as stories told, his gloves and fists coated a dark red by the battle's end. Arek walked away with as much blood, though what he did not tell was that much of it was his own. The Dotharl raided a neighboring tribe to get a feeling of battle once again, a tribe who had done no wrong. It was murder, and that was how Arek saw it.

He spread blood across his face where he often wore paint growing up, and with armor covering his wounds he was able to convince others that he was truly the twin brother of strength. Come the next day, though, it quickly became the talk of the tribe that no one truly saw Arek take a life. Was this reincarnation weak? Were these truly not the twins of battle? It was impossible that their Khatun was wrong!

Reknul encountered his brother as soon as he heard word, and he found his brother's injuries to learn that the rumors were true. "Brother, you lie to our people! Are you a coward?! You are no stranger to killing!" He yelled to his twin. "I will not murder innocents who've done nothing wrong, besides being the most convenient for us to kill!" Arek argued back.

"Perhaps you are not one of us."

They were the words that Arek heard the most clear, and were words that remained on his mind for days following. Multiple times did Reknul and others try to bring out Arek's 'true' spirit, though each attempt was met with failure. The Dotharl looked at him with nothing but disappointment after that battle.

On the ninth morning following that battle, Reknul found his brother gone from their home. His armor and weapons missing, and all of his supplies taken away. Try as he did to convince others to help him to find his brother, no one would help Reknul find his twin that proved himself as being nothing but weak. No fighting spirit, a soul that only glew dim.

Arek left his home behind the night before. He left under the cover of night, and traveled along the base of the mountains to the north. By the next morning he was paying for travel to the port city of Kugane with leather and hides. Following the next night he gave away what currency he could scavenge over the day selling his things. By the time the moon hung at the peak of the night sky, he was on a ship traveling west.

Years passed since that day, and a new home was found for Arek. He found a home with a group of adventurers whom he began to consider his friends, and his family. The five of them traveled all over Eorzea, taking jobs and doing what they could to bring forth a better tomorrow.

That is, until they decided to take on perhaps the biggest job of all. A job they gave themselves, with probably no chance of pay. The five went to the Battle of Cartenaeu, under the gaze of the lesser moon Dalamud. With everything they had the five fought, but it was all for nothing when the moon broke open. The five fled from that battle, but the destruction of the calamity was too much. The next day when Arek woke up in the dirt, he was alone.

Following a year after the destruction of the calamity, Arek found himself a home in the Shroud. Using his skills with a bow he hunts for leather and food. Using his skills with his axe and fists he continues to fight, either taking contracts for Centurio Hunts, or taking the occasional adventurer job as he would find them. He finds peace in this new life of his.

Though, truthfully, the words of the Dotharl continue to ring in his mind. Sometimes he wonders if they were right. Sometimes... when he sees someone boasting about their skills in battle... he will find himself looking at his axe, before he makes himself walk away. He's nothing like them.

At least... he hopes not.

Companions

Nakama

Nakama is a black chocobo with the capability to fly in areas where aether allows such. Arek considers him to be family more than he does a mount, a deep attachment that few may ever see between master and chocobo.
If Arek is out on a hunt or is in a battle, Nakama will be by his side in his light plate armoring. This chocobo has seen years of fighting in centurio hunts along side his master, and this has greatlu increased his ability to fight in various battles against all sorts of enemies.
At the same time, he's one of the most energetic and playful chocobos Arek has ever met. The moment he's given free reign he will either sprint at full speed in many directions, or he'll try to tackle down the nearest person. He always shows affection to those he knows, and he always wants to show it.
He'll never forget if you have good or bad pets.

Khur

Shar is Arek's primary form of transportation. He is exceeding gifted in speed when given a path to gallop along, and he has the stamina to maintain this charge for as long as needed.
Though the horse is easily intimidating for his size and chosen armor, Arek never takes him into a battle or anywhere he might be hurt. Arek's original plan was for him to be a mount he could ride into a fight, but he eventually learned that Shar wasn't able to get anywhere near battle without becoming anxious and fearful. Arek spent a long time attempting to train him, but eventually came to the conclusion that this massive horse would never work for battle. By this point, though, Arek already grew an attachment to him. He chose to keep him, knowing the horse would prove his worth in other ways.
Shar and Nakam get along like two brothers from entirely different mothers. If anything, the only time Arek has never seen Shar get the courage to encounter a foe was when the steed saw his chocobo companion get injured.

Tobia

Arek has only had Tobia for about three years as a companion, though he and the hawk have proven to be an effective hunting steam together in the shroud.
The hawk will often help Arek track down any pray he catches sight of in the air, and will signal his master to go in the direction of their mark. The reward he get from this is his share of the kill for dinner, which is why he has chosen to stay by Arek's side.
Tobia doesn't travel with Arek, he remains in the Shroud around Arek's home. He only leaves this general area if Arek calls for him, signaling that they're about to go hunt. Otherwise, the hawk primarily keeps to himself.
Though, he is fiercely territorial. If another bird of flight enters what he feels like is his home, he will attempt to chase them away.
